A septic system is an alternative to municipal sewer and allows wastewater from a household to be disposed of underground. This system consists of two primary parts: the septic tank and the drainfield. The septic tank is a watertight container made of concrete, fiberglass or polyethylene that temporarily holds the wastewater. The solids and floaters settle to the bottom of the tank, where they are partially decomposed by bacteria. The liquids, known as effluent, flow out of the tank and travel to the drainfield, a shallow network of trenches surrounded by gravel or sand for additional treatment by the soil.

During grease trap cleaning service, a septic technician stretches a hose from a truck to an opening in the septic tank and pumps out its contents. Typically, the pumping process takes less than an hour. The technician also inspects the septic tank level, baffles, sump and aerator shaft during this time.

Why Regular Septic Maintenance Is Essential for Your Property

The septic system is a reliable and cost-effective way to dispose of wastewater, but it needs proper care and cleaning. Regular septic tank cleaning prevents the solid waste particles from clogging drain field pipes. These particles can cause expensive and dangerous septic system failure.

Besides regular septic tank cleaning, you can reduce your environmental impact by being mindful of how much wastewater you use. Avoid running multiple appliances at the same time, take shorter showers and repair dripping faucets and toilets. Also, plant grass or shrubs over the drain field to control excess runoff and avoid building structures that could obstruct the absorption field.
